American Gothic.

americangothic

My current obsession is re-watching the entire season of American Gothic on Hulu. You may or may not remember this fantastic series from 1995. It was created by Shaun (Hardy Boy) Cassidy, and takes place in this small town called Trinity. The story revolves around a little boy(Caleb), his dead sister who talks to him as a ghost(Merlyn) and the town’s evil and supernaturally powerful sheriff, Lucas Buck, played to perfection by Gary Cole. I was worried that it might feel dated, but other than the ridiculously large cellphone a character spoke into, the series still holds up. It’s definitely just as creepy and scary as I remember. I have to remember to not watch this alone in the dark again, especially after hearing Merlyn chanting, “Someones at the door…someones at the door!” over and over right before all hell breaks loose. Catch all 22 episodes here.

Geek note: Sam Raimi was the executive producer and Brenda Bakke(Selena) was just recently on Dollhouse(“Haunted” episode).

Let’s all take a deep breath…

dollhouse3

Boy oh boy the interwebs were in a panic today about the potential cancellation of Dollhouse thanks to an announcement from Fox that they would not be airing the 13 episode “Epitaph One”(which is the 14th if you count the unaired pilot.) Twitters from actress Felicia Day and @drhorrible were only adding fuel to the fire when Tim Minear’s post cleared everything up.

So it seems, at least for the time being, that Dollhouse still has the potential to be renewed for second season. I have to say that Dollhouse has grown on me, I wasn’t too excited about it after the first episode but several episodes in, I am kinda hooked. I’m not holding my breath about the renewal though given the track record between Joss and Fox.

Speaking of The Wire…

elbaDid anyone watch last night’s The Office with Idris Elba(aka Stringer Bell)? He looked pretty much the same as he did on The Wire with his business suit, glasses and briefcase. I kept waiting for him to bitch slap Michael Scott though. Would have made the show a little more watchable for me.

I just haven’t been able to get into The Office this season. Maybe getting the chance to stare at Stringer Bell/Charles Minor for a half hour every week will change all that.

Watch the episode here at the internet’s gift to the unemployed and broke…Hulu.

Click here to be blown away by Idris Elba’s British accent as he talks to NPR’s Terry Gross about how he got the role of Stringer Bell. I can tell Terry is as big a fan of The Wire as I am.
